Personal Storytelling as a Healing Practice

A Dialogue on Memory, Meaning, and the Unexpected Gifts of Storytelling

Hello everyone,

A couple of weeks ago, I published an article on Substack about personal storytelling. In it, I shared how crafting a personal story can be a healing journey and potentially even life-changing. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, you can find it here: Personal Storytelling - Finding Aesthetic Distance and Deep Connection

In this post, you can listen in on a conversation between me and my husband, Peter Mohan. Together, we explore how personal stories can be both healing and transformative, drawing on examples from our own lives. We reflect on the process of shaping a memory into a story, and the deeper insights we have uncovered along the way—insights that can help free us from the grip of the past.

Peter and I first met at a Personal Storytelling workshop in Amari, Crete. Our guides at this workshop,  Sue Hollingsworth and Stella Kassimati, along with the village itself, became a deeply meaningful part of our lives—not least because, quite unknowingly, they planted the seed of our relationship.

Peter and I are both members of Friends of Amari, an international association contributing to the revival of the village. Amari is a place where stories are truly alive—woven into the land, the gatherings, and the relationships. Storytelling events are held there throughout the year. If you feel drawn to this thread, you can explore more here: Friends of Amari

We would love to hear your reflections on our conversation. Please feel free to share in the comments. We are looking forward to continuing this dialogue with you.
